This is what living well is all about..! Family and friends coming together and enjoying each others company. Our enjoyment generally revolves around dirt bike riding, and we don't care if you've got a brand spanking new KTM, the latest Yamaha, an old Quad or an antique Kawasaki, we'll rip and rag on all of them. In fact, you don't necessarily even need to ride a dirt bike to be welcome. 'Ya just gotta like having fun with friends. Top of The World that is!

I've said it before that not everybody can get to The Top of The World. First off, there's the matter of this secret passage. If you don't know where to turn you're done before you even get going.

Just as we start getting up some speed on a logging road, Ronnie say's: "Oh that ain't good" and we stop. "What ain't good", I said. "We lost a wheel"

Now the expression, 'Til the wheels fall off.. Doesn't really register with Ronnie.
He just puts them right back on and keeps on going.

Ronnie got out the cable and used the winch at one point. Of course Steve was not going to miss an opportunity to point out to him that Al didn't need to use his winch in the Polaris..!

Jurassic Park, that is.

We made two trips out to Jurassic Park this year.
Bobby was there on one trip to shoot this little video but not on the other trip because he's not in the group picture.

Sean's Husqvarna made it up over the hill coming out, but it died a mighty death doing it. Ronnie strapped up one wheel and everybody doubled up for the rest of the the ride back to camp.

Jimmy hadn't been on two wheels since he was a young Marine, but...
he wanted to go for a little ride anyway. Technically I suppose this is really only 'one' wheel, 'cause the front is tied into the Rhino. Ronnie turned into the street, stepped on it and whipped into the Camp and Cookie here went flying off. Welcome to my world, thats how I ride too..!

Maintenance & Set Up

For 2009 I collected just over 500 pictures. Some are junk and not worth posting. I've done Photoshop edits to about 300 ~ 350 to boost the color and take out red-eye. Of course while I was there I also made myself taller and thinner... took out some grey. Kidding. I don't have the vanity for all of that, but I did stretch several of you guys horizontally..! Kidding again, come on!
Now really, you've got to believe that I would never do anything like that..! Right?

Good Trade

When I was a kid I use to trade stuff with the other kids in the neighborhood all the time. But our parents would never let us trade for big stuff. Bicycles? Are you kidding me. NO way! "You bring that back to so-&-so's house and get yours back. NOW!"

So when these two conspirators came up with a plan to trade dirt bikes, I was a little hesitant. I had after all, just sunk 700 dollars into repairs like twenty minutes before coming to Maine. Jake has a Yamaha 250, 4 stroke and Danny, a Honda 125, 2 stroke, two years newer. Jake's Uncle Ron told me he didn't know anything about the history of the bike. Jake had sent a text to his Dad and he seemed OK with it.

No cash, No concessions, Straight up, old school trade. Mine for yours. Right now.
They did at least switch up rides for a day to be sure they both liked what they were getting. That's a big deal right! Ya want then to act like Men... treat 'em that way.
It's there deal to make.
But... Here I go buttin' in with one stipulation. (Damn parents) The deal was reversible for a week, no questions. Jakes Dad hadn't even seen the Honda yet.

So I guess we'll start with the group shot. Can we fit any more people in this picture?
I made sure we got the group shot on Saturday this time because we knew some guys were going to bail early on Sunday. It was like herding mice trying to get everybody to stop for five minutes. Twenty seven is the high number to date..! Ya couldn't swing a cat without hitting someone. (remember you can click almost any picture for a blowup)

We even had tents set up out back in Ben's camp. That was a first. Figures this is the one year his son shows up with his family to go hiking. Pete talked with him and I guess he was alright with it. What are Ya gona' do?

Tents and campers out across the road on Gary's property too. He's the neighbor up the end of the road and always has a good word for us. He went with a crew to the dump this year to get rid of a bunch of old metal that was piling up in the side yard. I think he was tired of seeing it as he passed by, so down he came...

"You guys, load that crap on a trailer and I'll come by in the morning and we'll get it out'a here." Pete had talked about getting a dump sticker, but never seemed to get up here in time (Slacker..!) to get to Town Hall. Done! Thanks Gary.

Barry twisted and wove a thorn bush into a crown of thorns.
I picked it up and stabbed my fingers and hand. I asked Barry, didn't that hurt trying to weave a hat from a thorn bush. He say's: "Well, I said Ouch a lot..!"

So Mike, thinking it made him look a lot like Jesus, decided to give the bikes a blessing. This is NOT blaspheme. It's just a bunch of guys in the woods of Maine having some fun. So please, don't write me any letters.

But during the Blessing of the Fleet, one bike didn't quite meet Brother Mike's high expectations.

And everyone wanted to know why.

What's the story to cause this..?

Apparently on Sunday's ride,
Jeff had such a bad time with his KTM,
and he was cursing it up and down so much,
Everyone said he should have left it in the
tree and stuck with the quad.

Now that's the alleged story...
I was not on Sundays ride because
I couldn't make it up the first rocky hill
and went back to Camp to mind the Keg
long before even young Zack called it a day.

Top of The World Again

First to the Top!

It's the fast guys that get to the top first. Always has been that way and will always remain.

They get there and hang out telling stories about the ride up, and wait for the other guys to get there.

And here they come...
Does that have three wheel drive or what?!

This is a lucky group. It's a long hard climb to get to The Top of The World.
I haven't gotten up there yet, but will next year come Hell or high water!
I've just gotta' see that view for myself...

Got Snacks

It's amazing how nobody's hungry until someone ( Cookie )
actually put's out some food. Even if it's just snacks. My brother-in-law Jimmy
and his son Billy came up this year... just to check it out. They forgot the fishin' gear but they both like to camp and both seem to love to cook.

You can imagine how well that worked out, because this crew loves to eat.
Even when they're not hungry. Want something to eat? "No, I'm good"
But if you put out food, they come like moths to a flame.

Jimmy brought up his Tailgating Grill and all the spices and fixin's
and accoutrements that go with it. I think after the second meal he cooked,
the crew nicknamed him Cookie. Well earned..!

Not to be left out for all his help over the grill, they tagged young Billy with the handle, Brownie.

Voted Most Photogenic KTM

Jeff's KTM is the most photographed dirt bike to ever grace The Camp.
I have no less than 30 pictures of this bike from one weekend. Still more to come.
I drove around the corner Friday night into Camp and bam!
There it was danglin' from a tree twenty feet in the air!

And just to be sure nobody missed it, there was a spot light on it too!
When you're playing a goof on someone and most people are arriving in the dark
of night, there's just no substitution for plaining ahead with good lighting.
'Ya just can't count on the chance of car headlights catching the right angle.

It appears that Jeff entrusted the hauling of his bike to someone else that had room and was going up the day before him. Wow! No slack for anyone up here. Now who would of happened to have that much rope handy? And a few hours to kill.

I told 'Ya there's a lot of pictures, right.

OK, fireworks in the middle of the woods may not have been the best idea ever, but it was a really wet summer anyway and it looked pretty cool.

I've wanted to try this video for a couple of years and my default edit program is still not powerful enough to get the effect I'm looking for. Add the compression from the upload and the sound track timing goes to hell from the fast scene changes.. I got it half way there as a test. Maybe next year...

Check Your Tiedowns

I was bringing the CR to the shop the other day in prep for another trip to Maine and
I had made sure the bike was strapped down pretty good. Anyone that has traveled
with me knows I use more tiedowns than one would think you really need. But I hate
stuff blowin' and flappin' on the trailer and if something moves, it means I failed in
the most basic element of a road trip. Safely takin' stuff with you.

I was no more than ten miles up the new route 44 extension and looking in the mirror
the bike looked like it was now leaning a little to the side. I was going to pull
over to the side of the road but the Spring Street exit was coming up so I turned off.
Pulled it to the road side at the bottom of the ramp and got out to check what was
going on. It was tight. Pushed and pulled the handlebars a bit and it didn't move at
all. The bars were strapped down, compressing the front fork a bit. I had a tiedown
on both foot pegs too. Over kill, some would say. I gave the front tiedowns another
pull and thought I must be imagining the lean.

Got back in, crossed Spring Street and started up the on ramp.
I heard a bang and felt a tug on the trailer, like I had bounced over a curb. That
couldn't be the case, I had seen and steered well clear of the island in the road.
A quick look in the rear view mirror showed nothing. Nothing? Where's the bike?!
I leaned foreword looking in the mirror and saw it laying over on the trailer floor.
Over to the side of the road I go again.

What the heck was going on here? There it was tipped over. The tiedown had let go?

When I first looked at it, that's what I had though, that the tiedown had slipped out. That wasn't it. It had broken. On the end that holds the mechanism to tighten and loosen the strap, it had torn apart. The threading that holds it together had all frayed and popped apart. Must have been from that one last tug that over tighten and caused too much stress.

Lucky that I used more tiedowns than I needed because I didn't have anymore in the truck. If I had only used the two I would have been screwed. I buy new tiedowns almost every year and I have no idea how old the blue one is that broke, but that brown and red tiedown is from 2001, my first trip up to Maine to ride. Proving once again that newer is not necessarily better. But be sure to check your tiedowns for wear and tear.

The rest of the trip to the repair shop was uneventful.

Here's what I'm so'post to see when I look in the mirror. CR in the middle, standing straight up. That looks better.

Hope the repair cost is not too much... C-Ya all in Maine..!

Workin' Weekend '09

Saturday, July 25th

Pete and I went up late Friday. Didn't get into Camp until close to midnight. Checked a few things and got all set up but we didn't even light a fire. Ronny, Brandon and Zack got in early Saturday morning. Got up had a cup of coffee and pretty much started right in.

Brandon did some wiring and he and Peter got the heater put in. I've never been a skier but we did ski Sunday River once and The Camp is now 'easy' for winter activity. No need to feed the wood stove if you didn't want to. Bring a couple of gallons of home heating oil and you've got heat for the weekend. No pictures. Have to add one later.

Ronny hauled up a bunch of lumber to do something with the outhouse. Peter's original plan was to raise it up a bit and put in a real toilet but the intended toilet never made the trip up. When it came time to pack the trailer he found out it was broken. I ended up stacking all the lumber behind the well and the plan seems to be shaping up to just built a new outhouse on Labor Day. The feeling is that Ronny and Sean can punch that out before the lunch time ride.

The other big item this weekend was to fell two big trees that hung over the back of The Camp. The first one was alive and growing and the 'lower' branches were touching the power line to the house and the peak and roof line. A majority of the branches were on the Camp side and it hung too far over the back of the Camp. We tied a rope around the tree, running it around another tree across the road and down the hill to the truck. Zack was driving the truck waiting for the signal.

(Our kids aren't so much 'kids' anymore!)

Ronny had dropped a few smaller trees already to clear the way for the big tree. We all talked about where it was going to go and that if the pull from the truck did what we wanted it to, then the tree would not touch the Camp. I kept asking about the limb that was already dangling near the power line and should we cut that first? Nope. It's all coming at once.
It dropped clean and right along the edge of the road.

The second big one was a huge old dead Birch. It was curved and split into two half's high up and leaned to the back of the Camp. Tied the tree off again around a tree across the road and down the hill to Zack in the truck. Ronny was over half way through the cut on the back side when the chain saw bound up. Wouldn't budge. Peter started in with the other saw but then stopped. We put more tension on the rope line with the truck and the top of the tree started swaying a little. The rope was pretty damn taunt. The saw was free now. Pete was talking about another line to a second truck going up the hill too so I went and squeezed his truck past Zack at the bottom of the road, under the rope and up the hill a ways.

Ronny mentioned that we can't run the line straight up the hill, it has to go around the same tree first and then up the hill. That way the tension is all in the same direction... away from the Camp. Away! Good plan. Pete tightened up his line and the top swayed a bit again! Ronnie fired up the saw, Brandon was down the hill with Zack and I was going to wave when it came time to pull.
I was looking only at the top of the tree. I could see Ronny working the saw, he was rocking it and pushing back and forth, but I was looking up. Only up, at the top of the tree. It looked heavy with old age. I wasn't sure when the exact moment would come and I hoped to recognize it when it came, but I couldn't look down for fear of missing what ever the hell I was watching for. One of those, "You'll know it when you see it".

Then the top of the tree started to vibrate and move against the sky. I was at a good angle. I had positioned myself so I could see the peak of the house as a reference point with the bright blue sky as the background for the tree. I had been standing with my arms parallel to the ground, bent at the elbows with forearms up in the air. Palms toward each truck. When the tree started it's topple from the sky above the Camp, gravity was pulling it the way we didn't want it to fall. It was moving and this was clearly my sign. I pushed my hands out to each truck, snapped them back up and pushed away again and started screaming as loud as I could, GO! GO! GO! GO! Pull! Pull! Pull! I was waving my arms and yelling like a mad man.

The tree hesitated in the sky for the briefest second, Ronny was still pushing the chain saw and then it started falling away from the Camp. As it was falling down it started shooting sideways, toward the road. The trucks had pulled perfectly in sync and dragged the tree bouncing and skidding across the road as it came down. It was against the natural order of things and better then we had hoped for. The tree was down, the Camp was fine and all was right with the weekend. You can see the skid mark across the road in the picture.

Of course after it was down there was yelling and high fives and everyone congratulated each other on knowing exactly where it was going to land... never any doubt... total control...

But damn it. Now you have to cut it up and lump it all off the road. We had taken a break when Paul came down from the top of the mountain and couldn't get by. We only kept him waiting five minutes or so. We were close to done by then.
And naturally there's no pictures of me workin' way harder than Zack, because I have the camera!

Ronny, Zack and Brandon took off about 7 that night. Peter and I put up some plastic sheeting through the front bedroom celling and down the wall Sunday morning. It's amazing how much better it looks with something as simple as that covering the insulation. We had also picked up a refrigerator at my Sister & Brother in-laws before we left and put it in place of the old one. The old one got pushed out the door to it's new home on the front porch. It might look a little Hicksville but the inside one 'll be for food and outside for drinks for Labor Day Weekend.

We had also cleaned out the the fire trough too. I forgot there were four inch circles drilled into the bottom of it. Those haven't had air through them in three years it was so full and clogged.

The old journal we write in was finally full and Pete had gotten a new one at the store. Kelly collects them and has them going back from when the tradition first started. The first thing I wrote in the new journal was I ain't coming on work weekends with Ronny or any of his people any more. Gettin' too old and can't even pretend to keep up.

Danny's engine blew up on the third day out.
I think it was Peter that said to Danny,
"OK, how do we blame this on your brother Sean?"
Danny and Sean had just done a top-end before the trip up.

We were right at the base of a mountain that we've climbed in previous years. It's very tough getting up this trail and the last time we had to take it one at a time. It's wicked steep and at some points it's just a three or four foot deep V, from all of the rain run off. You have to try and stay way to one side and crisscross where ever you can on the way up. If you slow to much or spin the rear too much, you'll slide into the V, and then good luck. Go back down and try again. I've got the Tee-Shirt on that one.
'Ya know, Go back... try again... you blew it.

We didn't get to go "up" this year. That Huge gate is new this year with signage for dirt bikes, and quads to 'stay out'. We ended up going a different way back around through the power lines and came down this trail. You don't rip anything up coming down and there were no signs on the down slope. We pretty much do as asked. If it says stay out, we do. But man... going up is more fun!

Sorry for the blurry picture. But even if it was sharp and focused, it doesn't do justice.
The good stuff is a couple of hundred yards up and out of sight here.

They got the bunk room all put together this year. Four or five guys were working and Bobby was sweating canon balls ( he stopped sweating 'bullets' when he was five ) At any rate I walked up with a tiny hammer and offered to 'help'. They all laughed and chased me away. All part of the master plan. ;-)
I went back to check the keg.

Don't expect any sympathy from these guys if you go to sleep early. They almost wrapped Barry's camper. But after he dove out the window when the boys woke him up for dinner, we didn't want him coming out the roof vent.

Some More Pictures and Still More to Come

I've got a few repeats in here that were on the last page.
I may go back and clear them out... maybe not. I had three folders and some were in an 'as is' state, just how they were downloaded from the camera and some were retouched for red eye or cropping... so it got confusing.

Chris had a mishap that I forgot to write about.
But this picture of him in pain made me recall it now. He was blasting through the woods giving Ronny and Russell a run. Now I'm not sayin' he was hot shotting, but he was banging bars with these guys and trying to get up front. The trail goes off to the right to a wooden snowmobile bridge over a water gully. Chris saw the chance to get ahead and tried to shoot the gully. Apparently he didn't make it without a price.
There's always a price isn't there?! Shortcuts aren't always shorter.
Crash and burn. As we crossed the bridge, we just saw him draggin' himself up out of another gully that he had bounced, crashed, rolled and fell into after he cased the far bank of the first gully.
"Pulled" a crotch muscle, he said. Or more likely banged the boys into the tank or the bars. Couldn't walk, couldn't stand and sure couldn't sit down. Pete went on to catch up, I went back to Camp with Chris real slow on the road. It was my first ride of the season, let alone my first ride in Maine that weekend and we had only gone about six miles. I was beat already. I'm not gettin' old mind you...
I'm just going on ahead to check it out for the rest of you.

We can't find the helmet cam or the video camera. Danny thinks it's still in Maine
Left behind, some how. So nothing to show for that. No movie files yet from the helmet cam. I hope like heck that we find the camera bag and contents next time up to the Camp. The bag may also have the original tapes from 2007. That in itself would be a good find.
